Former New York Rangers star Ron Duguay has died at age 69 following a battle with cancer. The news was announced on social media Thursday by his girlfriend, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Palin posted on X, "It's with a shattered heart, but also deep peace knowing Ron is with Jesus now. He fought so hard. Love never ends." On Wednesday, she had used her Instagram Story to ask for prayers for the former National Hockey League player.

Duguay began his professional career in the Ontario Hockey League in 1973 and made his NHL debut in 1977. He spent his first six seasons with the New York Rangers before joining the Detroit Red Wings for approximately three seasons. He also played a short stint for the Pittsburgh Penguins. After returning to the Rangers for two additional seasons, he concluded his NHL tenure with the Los Angeles Kings.

Over a career spanning 864 games, Duguay recorded 274 goals and 346 assists. He continued playing in other leagues after his NHL career ended, finally retiring in 1999.

The New York Rangers issued a statement mourning the loss of what the team described as one of the most popular players in franchise history. "Ron's signature skating style with his hair flowing as he moved down the ice captivated The Garden Faithful, and his skill, tenacity, and charisma earned him the admiration of all New Yorkers," the organization said. The team added that it joins the hockey community in sending condolences to Duguay's friends, family, and loved ones.
