Kevin Owens returned to WWE after nearly 16 months out with a serious neck injury and immediately seized the No. 1 contendership for the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam Night 2 in Minneapolis. The case for his comeback was settled in the ring. The complication is what it cost Sami Zayn and Finn Balor, the two wrestlers who had earned the right to compete for that same spot.
How a two-man match became four
SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, reinstated to his role the previous night after losing to Gunther at SummerSlam Night 1, exercised his executive authority before the first bell. He added Gunther to the originally scheduled Zayn-Balor contest. Then he added Owens.
The crowd at U.S. Bank Stadium had not been told what was coming. When Owens appeared, the reaction was immediate. Fox News Digital reported the crowd nearly shattered the glass in the building.
What the match showed
Owens went after Balor and Gunther from the opening moments. Zayn, who had told Fox News Digital in June that Owens simply needed time to recover, stood briefly stunned at the return before the two embraced. Then they traded blows. Owens put his injured neck to the test early: running sentons and a swanton from the top rope onto all three opponents. Gunther applied multiple submission holds across the match and came close to forcing a tap-out on more than one occasion.
The match narrowed, in the end, to Zayn and Owens. Zayn landed a Blue Thunder Bomb and could not get the pin. Owens answered with a superkick, then a stunner, and secured the fall.
The counterargument
The counterargument belongs to Zayn and Balor, and it deserves a fair hearing. Both men had built their contendership cases over weeks before Aldis intervened. His decision to expand the match, particularly by adding Owens on the night of his own return, short-circuited what either competitor had coming. That the crowd received the result well does not resolve the competitive logic.
On balance, Owens' performance answered the physical questions raised by a 16-month absence. What's changed is his standing. The line to watch is his match against CM Punk, one win away from a world championship.
