London is now a live testing ground for Baidu's Apollo Go autonomous vehicles, which will be available through Freenow, the European mobility network Lyft acquired in 2025. The arrangement gives Baidu a distribution channel in a major Western city and extends Lyft's Freenow platform into autonomous vehicle territory. The tension is that entering a market and establishing one are different things, and London has proved willing to absorb multiple rounds of robotaxi ambition without delivering a lasting commercial result.
What the Lyft-Baidu arrangement does for Freenow
Lyft's acquisition of Freenow in 2025 was a bet on owning European mobility infrastructure rather than licensing into it. Pairing Baidu's Apollo Go with that network is the first substantive product decision to follow from that acquisition. Apollo Go vehicles will appear on the Freenow platform, giving Baidu a consumer-facing presence in London without requiring it to build a booking product or brand from scratch.
For Lyft, the read-through is structural. A mobility platform that carries an autonomous vehicle product occupies a different competitive position than a booking app, and the Freenow integration is the clearest signal yet of where Lyft intends to take the acquisition.
The counterargument
The counterargument deserves serious weight. London's road environment and regulatory requirements have historically extended autonomous vehicle timelines beyond what companies project at the testing stage. Baidu's Apollo Go has a commercial record in China, which is a genuine credential. Chinese operating conditions do not map directly onto London's street layout or its regulatory expectations, and the two environments are different enough that the testing period may surface friction the current announcement does not address.

On balance, the structure is rational. Lyft holds the European network, Baidu holds the vehicle technology, and neither is duplicating what the other brings. What neither holds yet is a demonstrated London operation. Apollo Go vehicles appearing on Freenow is where that test begins.
