Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ: GNTX) reported third-quarter 2026 net sales of $647.7 million, a figure the company stated was approximately $35 million below its beginning-of-quarter forecast due to customer issues and delayed launches. The result was slightly lower than the $655.2 million reported for the same period in 2025, raising questions about the impact of regional production declines on the supplier's revenue base.

The company attributed the sales shortfall to specific operational factors, while noting that automotive unit performance during the quarter was consistent with expectations. North American automotive revenue increased by approximately 3% year over year, outpacing a 5% decline in regional light vehicle production by about 800 basis points. In Europe, automotive revenue grew 13% year over year, excluding the impact of a Volkswagen program loss which Gentex said more than offset growth in the rest of the region. Globally, automotive revenue rose 2% year over year, excluding previously announced headwinds in China and with Volkswagen, despite global light vehicle production declining by more than 2%.

Gentex’s gross margin for the third quarter of 2026 was 33.4%, down from 34.4% in the third quarter of 2025. President and CEO Steve Downing cited rising precious metal costs and a sales shortfall as the main factors behind the decline. He explained that the lower-than-expected revenue reduced operating leverage and created an unfavorable product mix for the period. Downing added that higher precious metal costs have been an ongoing headwind over several quarters as commodity prices have increased significantly.

Non-automotive revenue increased by approximately 17% year over year, representing 15% of total company revenue during the third quarter of 2026. This compares to approximately 12% of total revenue in the third quarter of 2025. Premium Audio revenue, a component of non-automotive sales, increased by 27% year over year to $54.7 million. Other Products, including Aerospace, Biometrics, Fire Protection, and Automotive Aftermarket, collectively increased by 5% year over year.

Income from operations under GAAP standards was $115.1 million for the third quarter of 2026, compared to $122.3 million in the prior year period. Adjusted income from operations on a non-GAAP basis was $118.8 million, compared to $123.4 million in the third quarter of 2025. Net income attributable to Gentex was $90.6 million under GAAP, while adjusted net income on a non-GAAP basis was $97.8 million. Earnings per diluted share were $0.43 under GAAP and $0.47 on an adjusted non-GAAP basis.

Consolidated operating expenses decreased to $101.3 million from $102.8 million in the prior year quarter. On a non-GAAP adjusted basis, operating expenses fell to $97.5 million from $101.8 million. COO and CTO Neil Boehm stated that the decrease reflects a continued focus on managing operating expenses as sales growth has moderated during 2026. Boehm added that the team continues to execute on launches and core R&D initiatives, including a dimmable visor product scheduled to launch late next year and a large area device R&D project moving closer to a qualified product.

During the quarter, Gentex repurchased 5.7 million shares for a total of $132.6 million. The company also announced it was awarded its first printed circuit board assembly contract, with production expected to begin in 2029.
