Detroit has entered the top 10 list of the most rodent-infested cities in the United States for the first time, according to annual data released by pest control company Terminix. The ranking, based on rodent control service data from more than 300 Terminix branches nationwide in 2025, places the Michigan city at No. 10, up from No. 11. This development highlights a persistent urban challenge that has previously drawn complaints from local residents and city officials.

New York and Los Angeles retained the top two positions on the list, while Philadelphia moved up one spot to claim No. 3. Other cities returning to the top 10 included Houston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Dallas. The presence of these established urban centers alongside Detroit underscores the widespread nature of rodent issues in major American metropolitan areas.

The inclusion of Detroit on the list follows prior expressions of concern regarding rodent infestations in the city. In a 2023 memorandum obtained by Fox News Digital, Mary Sheffield, who was serving as the city council president at the time, noted that residents raised rodent infestations as a primary complaint during a community meeting. Sheffield stated that many demolition properties in Detroit had become homes for rat infestations. Fox News Digital reached out to Sheffield's office for comment regarding the new rankings.

Following Detroit, the list continued with Hartford, Atlanta, Baltimore, Tampa, and Sacramento, which rounded out the top 15. Terminix attributes the presence of these cities on the list to three shared factors: large populations, abundant food sources, and ample hiding spots for rodents. The company explained that these conditions provide rats and mice with the necessary resources to survive and reproduce.

According to a company release, large populations generate significant amounts of food waste, while urban features such as dumpsters, alleys, and parks offer rodents easy access to food. Additionally, older buildings, subway systems, and sewer networks provide spaces for rodents to travel, hide, and nest. Terminix is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee.

The company urged residents in affected areas to take preventive measures to lower the risk of infestation. Recommended steps include sealing cracks and openings around doors, windows, and foundations, storing food in airtight containers, and maintaining clean living spaces free of crumbs and food residue. Terminix stated that these actions can significantly help lower the risk of a rodent infestation for those living in the most affected cities.
