Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ: COST) heads into its fiscal fourth-quarter report on September 24 carrying strong topline momentum and a dividend track record that has grown conspicuous by timing alone. The special payout investors appear to be positioning for almost certainly won't materialize on the call itself. September 24 is more likely to be the tell.

The sales picture is clean. For the 16-week fiscal period that ended late last month, net sales grew 11.3% to $93.9 billion, driven by a 10.7% jump in U.S. comparable-store sales. What's changed for this particular earnings event is the weight on the bottom-line read. The top-line numbers are already public; how the chain performed on the bottom line is what September 24 resolves.

The case for something bigger turns on Costco's history with one-time payouts. The company has raised its quarterly dividend for 22 consecutive years, but at 0.7%, the regular yield is a byproduct of the stock's own price appreciation outpacing its distributions. The real action for income investors has been in the special dividends: $7 a share in December 2012, $5 in February 2015, $7 again in May 2017, $10 in December 2020, and $15 in December 2023. The pattern is every two to three years. Three years have elapsed since the last one. The arithmetic is not complicated.

The counterargument deserves its own space. Five distributions across fourteen years is a pattern, not a commitment, and Costco has issued no guidance on a special dividend. The last two December payouts were declared in November and December, placing the September 24 call well outside the historical announcement window. The risk is that investors pricing in the expectation are trading a cadence rather than a fact, and if management says nothing suggestive about its cash position, the trade unwinds on elapsed time alone.

On balance, the sales story is documented and the dividend history is real. The line to watch on September 24 is any comment from management about the cash Costco has been accumulating since 2023. That language, if it surfaces, is the mechanism. The last two special dividends were declared in the final two months of the calendar year.
