Casey's General Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:CASY) reported a 27.7% jump in fiscal 2027 first-quarter earnings per share and maintained its full-year guidance, yet the stock fell after the release. The market reaction highlights a tension between a strong quarterly report and the sustainability of the specific drivers behind it, particularly in the fuel segment.
The divergence in analyst views centers on whether the earnings beat reflects durable growth or temporary tailwinds. Wells Fargo characterized the quarter as a miss against elevated investor expectations, arguing that the underlying growth model remains intact and that the lower valuation makes the shares more appealing. BMO echoed this sentiment, pointing to healthy traffic and a 7.7% two-year increase in inside same-store sales. KeyBanc similarly viewed the pullback as an attractive entry point, noting that shares trade at 26.7 times its new fiscal 2028 EPS estimate.
The strongest earnings driver came from fuel margins, which reached 47.8 cents per gallon, up 6.8 cents year-over-year. This increase pushed fuel gross profit 19.6% higher to $446.9 million. However, fuel same-store gallons slipped 0.3%. Stephens cut its target price to $750 from $975 while maintaining an Overweight rating, stating that the EPS beat was driven by stronger fuel margins while inside-store comparisons and fuel gallons were softer than expected. Goldman Sachs kept a Neutral rating but lowered its target to $750 from $795, citing fuel share gains, strong fuel margins, and a lower effective tax rate.
Other firms adjusted their targets based on near-term noise and category re-ratings. Bank of America kept a Buy rating and called Casey's a top-tier convenience operator but cut its target to $875 from $975. Deutsche Bank raised its target to $933 from $927 with a Buy rating. RBC lowered its target to $910 from $913 with a Sector Perform rating.
Analysts also pointed to operational headwinds. CEFCO remodeling disrupted roughly 1% of the store base in the first quarter, and management expects the next tranche of remodeling to create an even larger drag before benefits emerge, potentially not until the fourth quarter. KeyBanc expects fuel-margin improvements to moderate and noted that inside sales have lost some momentum. Wells Fargo suggested the first quarter could prove an unusually strong period for fuel margins as Casey's faces tougher industry trends inside its stores.
Several institutions lowered targets without additional commentary. Evercore ISI cut its target to $775 from $880 while retaining an Outperform rating. UBS reduced its target to $720 from $925 with a Neutral rating, and JPMorgan lowered its target to $687 from $833 with a Neutral rating.
Institutional positioning showed mixed activity in recent 13F filings. AQR Capital Management increased its stake by 195% to 213,943 shares, while GLG Partners raised its position by 73% to 138,999 shares. Arrowstreet Capital initiated a position of 126,911 shares. Conversely, Marshall Wace and Quantinno Capital each trimmed their holdings by approximately 1%.
