Brandon Johnson's rooftop video surfaces on the same weekend as his re-election announcement

A rooftop video of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson dancing to Kiesza's "Hideaway" went viral on X this week, circulating over the same weekend he announced a second-term bid. His critics did not wait.

The read-through from conservative commentators was swift. Fox News contributor Joe Concha posted a pointed question about the video. Benny Johnson, a conservative commentator, cited the mayor's 23% approval rating and a weekly shooting rate of 40 people, adding that businesses were fleeing the city. New York Post contributor Miranda Devine called the video "embarrassing and pathetic." Ambassador Nick Adams, serving as the Trump administration's special presidential envoy for American tourism, exceptionalism and values, called for the mayor's impeachment over the clip. Kaltbaum Capital President Gary Kaltbaum and the X account True Patriot Voice weighed in. The X account End Wokeness, sharing the footage, cited 1,320 people shot in Chicago so far in 2026.

The crime data on the record gives some of the criticism its grounding. Chicago Police Department figures through June 26 show shootings up about 3% from the same period last year and motor-vehicle thefts up 10%. Preliminary Cook County Medical Examiner data puts homicides at 219 through June 30, compared with 208 in the first half of 2025. Johnson has been in office since 2023.

The counterargument deserves its space. Joe Concha, Benny Johnson, Miranda Devine, and Ambassador Nick Adams are all associated with conservative media or the current Republican administration. The X accounts amplifying the video lean the same direction. The video itself shows a mayor at a rooftop filming. It does not, by itself, establish that governing stopped. The criticism is loud; its sourcing is nearly monolithic.

On balance, the clip is unlikely to decide a second-term race on its own. The line to watch is whether the crime numbers generate organized opposition from within Chicago rather than from commentators outside it. Johnson's campaign confirmed his participation in the video but did not say when it was filmed.
