BlackRock sees continued strength in Bitcoin as the asset breaks out of its previous trading range, a move that has driven record trading volumes for the asset manager's spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund. The development raises questions about the durability of current investor conviction in digital assets, particularly as macroeconomic concerns persist.

Robbie Mitchnick, BlackRock's head of digital assets, attributes the bullish outlook to growing conviction among investors. He noted that debt and deficit levels remain a major concern for markets, factors he believes are benefiting assets like Bitcoin. Mitchnick observed that equities have begun to lag behind Bitcoin while the bond market remains choppy.

The iShares Bitcoin Trust (NASDAQ: $IBIT), operated by BlackRock, is the largest spot Bitcoin ETF. Over the past week, trading volumes in the fund hit a record as its share price tracked Bitcoin's 23% gain and move up to $80,000 U.S. The fund's share price surged 22.59% to $43.68 U.S. last week, marking its best performance since February 2024. This rally was accompanied by net inflows of $1.33 billion U.S.

BlackRock is positioned to benefit from the current rise in Bitcoin's price, with the spot BTC ETF holding $63 billion U.S. of investor capital. Mitchnick stated that the combination of record trading volumes and strong inflows highlights strong conviction among both institutional and individual investors, distinguishing the current activity from short-term speculation. The IBIT fund was trading at $44.46 U.S. on Aug. 27.
