Anavex Life Sciences Corp. has concluded the clinical conduct of two key pharmacology studies for its lead candidate, blarcamesine, marking a significant step in its regulatory strategy for central nervous system disorders. The company, which trades under the ticker AVXL, reported that the Drug-drug Interaction (DDI) and Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion (ADME) trials in healthy volunteers are now complete. Interim Chief Executive Officer Terrie Kellmeyer stated that these data are expected to support the clinical pharmacology characterization across the company's pipeline, aligning with recommendations from both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency.
The DDI study, which concluded at the end of September, enrolled 65 participants who each received 30 mg of blarcamesine. The ADME study finished in mid-October with eight participants, also dosed at 30 mg. Anavex reported preliminary observations of no serious adverse events in either trial, though full safety and pharmacokinetic data analysis remains ongoing. These studies are designed to further characterize the drug's profile and are considered critical for the Alzheimer's disease program, while also supporting development efforts in Rett syndrome and Fragile X syndrome.
Beyond the pharmacology data, Anavex highlighted progress in its other core indications. The FDA has cleared the Investigational New Drug application for blarcamesine in Fragile X syndrome, a program that has been granted Orphan Drug Designation. Study start-up activities for this indication are currently underway. In parallel, the company is preparing for a November meeting with the FDA to discuss adding pediatric participants to its Phase 3 study in adult participants with Rett syndrome. That protocol, designated ANAVEX2-73-RS-005, remains on track with start-up activities in progress and has also received Orphan Drug Designation.
Anavex described the completion of these studies as an important milestone that advances the data package recommended by the FDA. The company noted that these achievements reflect execution on timelines previously set forth and position it to continue moving forward on its strategic objectives through the remainder of the year. The press release includes standard forward-looking statements cautioning that actual results may differ from projections due to various factors, including regulatory challenges and market volatility.
