A miss there invites the familiar question: company-specific story, or something wider. The case for reading it broadly has real traction. A retailer of that size doesn't miss in a vacuum, and the sell-off reflects that.
The counterargument deserves its due, though: disappointing earnings at one company, even this one, is a single data point. Drawing a consumer conclusion from it requires more than one quarter at one chain.
