Trey Gowdy never lost a case as a prosecutor.
On a recent episode of the "Hang Out With Sean Hannity" podcast, the former prosecutor and current Fox News host explained what that record actually costs: the capacity to internalize a victim's grief and transmit it to a jury, a skill he said "wrecks you." The case for that model of prosecution is straightforward, at least in Gowdy's telling.
The best prosecutors, he told host Sean Hannity, are the ones who can "make the jury feel what the parents feel." That kind of transference requires something he called an empathetic gene, either innate or acquired.
Having children helps, he said. But the actual work is converting private anguish into something a jury can feel.
