The immediate occasion was a set of 2020 comments from James Talarico, a Texas Democratic state representative running for U.S. Senate against Republican Ken Paxton.

CNN's K-File reported that Talarico, speaking at an Austin Sierra Club forum during his first term, described capitalism as an "oppressive system" tied to White supremacy and climate change, and called for dismantling all three together.
