Smith & Wesson's profit swing has a $2.9 million footnote

Smith & Wesson Brands (NASDAQ: SWBI) turned a year-ago quarterly loss into $0.06 in GAAP earnings per share on September 3, with net sales of $112.6 million running 32.3% above a year earlier.

The case for a real turnaround is there. So is a $2.9 million non-recurring tariff refund that accounted for 260 of the 280 basis points of gross margin expansion, a figure management flagged as one-time.

The volume story is the cleanest part. Unit shipments rose nearly 20% against a 7.7% increase in adjusted NICS, the industry's closest available measure of retail demand at the counter.

Handgun shipments to sporting goods retailers climbed almost 17% while the NICS handgun category grew roughly 5%. Long-gun shipments were up nearly 22% against a 10% NICS rise.
