Siller family to retrace 9/11 hero's tunnel run as Tunnel to Towers marks 25 years

Twenty-five years after FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel in 60 pounds of gear toward the burning World Trade Center, his family will make the same walk.

The journey closes the Tunnel to Towers "Steel Across America" tour and arrives in New York with a specific new commitment attached: 343 mortgage-free homes, one for each of the 343 New York firefighters the organization says died on September 11.

The case for the walk mattering beyond ceremony sits in what Tunnel to Towers has already built.

Since the foundation was established in Siller's memory, the organization says it has provided more than 1,700 mortgage-free homes to families of fallen service members and first responders, as well as to disabled veterans and first responders.
