Former NFL linebacker and ESPN NFL analyst Sam Acho attended the Ronald Reagan Foundation Center on Civility and Democracy's inaugural Reagan Civility and Democracy Forum last week and argued that athletes carry a genuine responsibility to use their public platforms for civil discourse.
What complicates it is that the same reach amplifies incivility just as efficiently. What the forum asked athletes to carry Acho drew a direct line between athletic competition and political discourse.
Disagreement, in his framing, is not the problem. Football teams disagree on whether a 3-4 or 4-3 defense is superior, or whether to blitz or play coverage, yet the goal stays constant.
He applied that logic to political life: people may dispute which law or approach is better, but the animating purpose should be improving the country.
