The case for AI regulation got louder this week as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned Congress that artificial intelligence poses an existential threat and the pace of innovation should be slowed.
What complicates that case: a growing cohort of Republican lawmakers who believe the real motive is market entrenchment. Troy Downing (R-Mont.) was blunt.
"I think there's a false sense of urgency," he told Fox News Digital, adding that any company claiming doom has the power to slow down in its own shop.
Downing, who founded WebCal, later acquired by Yahoo!, and worked as a research scientist at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, speaks from inside the industry.
