Puerto Rico statehood push runs into a tax problem residents can already feel

The case for Puerto Rico becoming the 51st state has a clean political logic.

The complication is that the people most directly affected by that logic keep naming the same thing: a federal tax structure change they say their wages cannot absorb.

Puerto Rico has operated under a different federal tax arrangement since the United States acquired the island from Spain in 1898.

Statehood would bring the territory more fully into the federal tax system, and that shift is what is driving the friction on the ground.
