NHTSA opens probe into 1.2 million Tesla vehicles over suspension failures

A preliminary federal investigation now covers nearly 1.2 million Tesla vehicles after complaints about a front suspension component that can detach while driving and strip the driver of directional control, arriving in most cases without any advance warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened the probe on 156 complaints. That number will define its own significance as the agency decides whether to escalate.

What the filing covers The investigation, reported earlier by Reuters and filed through the NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation, targets the 2018-2020 Model 3 and the 2021-2023 Model Y.

The failure involves the detachment of the front lower lateral link. In most cases the NHTSA reviewed, no warning preceded the failure.
