A tree fell at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland, Massachusetts on Tuesday morning and killed an 8-year-old boy, a death that came on what should have been a routine summer camp morning.
A camp counselor was also struck and injured in the same incident. The boy was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The chain of events, as Fire Chief Neil McPherson described it to MassLive, moved without warning. A tree fell, struck a second tree, and the two produced what McPherson called a domino effect.
The boy was hit by a large branch. The adult counselor was hit by a smaller one. First responders reached the scene to find the child suffering from life-threatening injuries and the adult from less serious ones.
