AST SpaceMobile Needs 45 Satellites By Early 2027 To Start Commercial Service

AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) reported that 13 BlueBird satellites are currently in orbit, a figure management considers insufficient to begin commercial operations.

The company stated on its fiscal Q2 2026 earnings call on August 10, 2026, that it requires approximately 45 to 60 satellites to provide continuous service across the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Executives have set a target to have about 45 spacecraft in orbit by early 2027. This orbital milestone is the primary determinant for the company's transition from development to revenue generation.

AST SpaceMobile is building a cellular broadband network in space that works with unmodified mobile phones.
